The paper deals with the seismic resistance assessment of the new HPP MATKA penstock system located in an area endagered by earthquake. The complex computation model for the seimic analysis using finite element method of discretization is described. The model includes part of the rock massive, the reinforced concrete structure of the main penstock tunnel, the surge tank branch, two wye branches with branch pipes, and the two steel penstock systems with butterfly valves and dismantling joints at the spiral case intel. Problems related to the determination of subsoil properties are analyzed. Dead loads as well as pressure loads have been considered in computing the combined responses. The Approach in the assessment of limit states of the structures in the sesimic design situation is described.
