This paper is devoted to the experimental study of surface texturing on lubricant film formation within concentrated contacts operated under rolling/sliding conditions. Micro-dents of various depths and shapes have been produced on rubbing surface to find an experimental evidence of the micro-feature depth threshold for surface texturing applications in highly loaded non-conformal surfaces. Moreover, the behavior of an array of micro-dents within thin EHD contacts has been studied to observe the effect of the location of micro-features within the contact. The significant effect of micro-dents size and shape has been observed as a function of slide-to-roll ratio. Obtained results show that the presence of micro-features within the contact may results in lubrication film breakdown. Nevertheless, properly designed surface texturing can provide beneficial tribological performances even for highly loaded non-conformal surfaces.
