ASM (Any Source Multicast) and SSM (Source-Specific Multicast) are the two types of multicast used in IP-based networks. SSM is expected to cover all types of multimedia sessions with many receivers and only one source, such as IPTV broadcasting. The paper describes simulation tools for IPTV broadcasting systems with millions of subscribes. These numbers of receivers are expected when the IPTV technology will is available and affordable for the majority of TV stations. The aim of these simulations is to estimate the whole communication system behaviour, in particular the time requirements to transmit the feedback information from receivers to the source. The feedback from receivers is used by the media source, for example, for the parameterization of a multicast forward error correction (FEC) algorithm or the tuning of audio suppression algorithms. The feedback transmitted usually contains information about the synchronization of transmitted media (audio, video), packet loss, packet delays, and jitter. The simulation tools presented below are an SSM multicast model developed in SDL (Specification and Description Language) and an IPTV client/server application, which allows creating virtual clients to obtain the required number of receivers.
