For range-based localization algorithms, the distance estimation is a necessary input parameter. Ranging is a process run by sensor motes to obtain the distance between them. This paper gives a brief overview of ranging techniques and presents experimental results from measurements focused on the ranging technique based on the different time of propagation of radio and ultrasonic signal. For the measurements, Cricket nodes were used in order to investigate the performance and accuracy of the technique. The results show that the smallest achieved error can be up to 10% with low variation of measured values in ideal conditions.
