At the Department of Telecommunications in Brno, a flexible ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) network is situated. This ATM network consists of two active elements- switches (the technology Cisco is used) and it is connected to the Brno university high-speed network. A simple ring network is designed in this way. It is in actual operation, but it is also good for intensive research. The operation of this experimental network incorporated in the MAN network in Brno was modelled and optimized. This paper describes the main results received in the ATM network activity simulation by the COMNET III programme. The multimedia network model contains important applications, namely the hall and desk videoconferencing, E1 circuits transmission, use of IP telephony, video on demand, TV and radio distribution and data transmission. The viewpoints for multimedia network optimization of high-speed operation are designed. They are transmission speeds viewpoint, network reliability viewpoint, data transmission delay viewpoint and delay jitter viewpoint. This optimized ATM network has been designed according to simulation results.
