The paper focuses on the importance and position of tourism within the economy of the Czech Republic, and on one significant segment of tourism in particular: congress and incentive tourism (CIT). It includes a determination of its economic significance in accordance with the Czech Statistical Office s Satellite Account of Tourism in the Czech Republic 2003-2005, and data statements on incoming tourism, domestic tourism and outgoing tourism. In 2005 tourism accounted for 2.8 % of the gross added value of the Czech economy and 3.1 % of GDP. In the period investigated, expenditure by tourists nevertheless increased: in 2005 total consumption of internal tourism in the Czech Republic amounted to 217 billion CZK. More than 23 million foreign visitors travelled to the Czech Republic in 2005. In the same year the revenue of the Czech Republic from these visitors exceeded 121 billion CZK. In 2005 residents of the Czech Republic made almost 105 million journeys away from their usual surroundings. The majority of these journeys were one day trips (72 million), while holidaymakers accounted for almost 33 million journeys. In the same year consumption of domestic tourism amounted to a figure of 95 billion CZK. In 2005 residents made a total of 10.8 million trips abroad. Consumption of outgoing tourism in 2005 amounted to a figure of almost 65 billion CZK. Congress and incentive tourism comprises an important segment of the tourism industry with significant growth potential. The Czech Republic has excellent preconditions for becoming an attractive destination for CIT. It can offer a wide range of wonderful and varied historical sights suitable for city tourism and sightseeing. Thanks to the relief of its landscape and its unique mineral springs it is also a suitable destination for active tourism and spa residences. In addition to this, it also offers a wide range of hotels and congress venues with a quantity of conference facilities and a standard of services entirely comparable with global standards. The importance of location attractiveness from the viewpoint of CIT depends on a number of determined factors. Trends in CIT and individual products are described. The given conditions for CIT are of great importance. The organisation of CIT is also considered. The aim of the work is to give an account of the current situation and the possibilities for the future development of tourism in the Czech Republic, with a particular focus on congress and incentive tourism (CIT). One area of discussion may be the inclusion of universities in the process of organising congress and incentive tourism, and particularly the organisation of their own congress events. The Faculty of Business and Management has indisputable experience in this area, which can be further developed in the future. The result is a statement of statistical data and the economic results of tourism, and conditions and preconditions for the development of the important segment which congress and incentive tourism indisputably is.
