The radiation transfer is the dominant energy exchange mechanism during the high current period of the switching operation in high power circuit breakers. The switching arc or plasma is ignited inside a narrow nozzle of synthetic material (PTFE, Polythetraflourethylen). Due to the high emission of radiation from the arc, the synthetic material ablates and causes a high overpressure inside the nozzle and drives the gas flow in the circuit breaker. Life expectancy and switching capability depends on the ablation and the geometrical change of the nozzle caused by radiation. Detailed information about the local arc structure and the local distribution of ablation can only be given by radiation models which allow the calculation of the distribution of emission and absorption. In the paper we used Method of Partial Characteristics (MPC) to predict the radiation processes and to provide necessary data in a PTFE atmosphere and any mixture of SF6 and PTFE at various pressures.
