The aim of this article is to introduce a method of colouring brick body using waste materials originating during the production of steel. Steel dust is, due to its high content of ferric compounds, high grain fineness and zero price, a very perspective material that is capable of contributing not only to a very significant colouring of the body but also to the increase of its utility properties. The dosage of 2.0 - 3.5 - 5.0 % of steel dust was used for standard raw material mixture for the production of clay roofing tiles. Even the lowest addition of the steel dust has been able to colour the body significantly and, at the same time, to reduce its water absorption as well as water permeability after firing in an operating tunnel kiln, which is very advantageous for the body of frost-resistant roofing tiles. The used steel dust can be classified as colourant as well as flux without any documented negative effects on the toxicity of the fired brick body.
