The optical properties of impurities within nanocrystals embedded in glass or polymer matrix have been examined, and in particular of Mn2 in ZnS nanocrystals. Therefore we have provided a measurement in the optical near-field of local spatial distribution of luminescence by using SNOM microscope at emission peaks of materials at 585-595 nm, which is due to the luminescence of Mn2 in ZnS. The time-resolved emission spectra in nanocrystals exhibit a quite long decay time (order of microseconds rather than sub-nanoseconds for a bulk material), caused by the formation of hot spot centers. The slow relaxation of excited vibrational modes in nanocrystals could have a significant impact on possible future applications in large-area illumination devices and other nanoparticle device applications.
