A multi-layer pipe consisting of two different layers was analyzed. The inside layer is made of HDPE whereas the outside protective layer is PPH. The relevant numerical model based on the Finite Element Method (FEM- system ANSYS) was used to calculate the stress and strain distribution and to estimate the fracture characteristics. As variables the thickness of the material layers and their elastic modulus were chosen. The J-integral versus crack growth resistance (J-R) curves was determined according to ASTM D 6068 - 96 Standard by using an arc-shaped tensile specimen and the multiple specimen method. The calculated values of the stress intensity factor and the experimentally determined initial values of the J integral make it possible to estimate the critical fracture stress for a two-layer pipe with a different value of the ratio E1/E2. It follows from the results obtained that the corresponding service life of two-layer pipes can be influenced by their material composition and this fact can be used to increase the lifetime of pipes.
