Research, development and innovation represent a common interest for each EU member state. According to the Article 163/1 of the EC Treaty the key objective in this area is to strengthen the scientific and technological bases of the Community's industry and encourage it to become more competitive at international level. All documents concerning research and development in the framework of the Community shall be in accordance with this goal-setting. The multifold support of research, development and innovation through university-firm cooperation that considers the country's special features can play a significant role in raising the competitiveness of the individual member-states and the EU as a whole in the long run.
