Originální abstrakt
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are synthetic chemical compounds which have been used widely in industrial applications. Thanks to their lipophilic character and high resistance to degradation PCBs persist in the global environment and accumulate in higher trophic levels of the food chains. Some of the PCB congeners also show similar toxic effects as polychlorinated dibenzodioxins (PCDD). We looked for indicator PCB congeners No. 28, 52, 118, 138, 153 and 180, minority PCB congeners No. 8, 18, 47, 49, 187, 189 and 209, and some non-orthosubstituted congeners No. 77, 81, 126 and 169. All the monitored PCB congeners of different ratios and concentration were identified in the samples of sediments. The highest rate of contamination was found in the samples from the notorious loaded areas, such as the surroundings of the towns of Uherské Hradiste or Žamberk, where the PCB containing industrial mixtures were used in the process of production.
