Lignite is known as a material from which relatively large quantity of humic acids (HA) can be extracted. Since HA are heterogeneous mixtures of substances, the exact determination of their structure is very controversial. HA vary in composition depending on their source, location and method of extraction. In this work, the general characterization of HA isolated from South-Moravia lignite and some fractions extracted thereof with buffer solutions is reported. Two ways of fractionation were used: 1) HA were mixed with buffer at the lowest pH value, then the insoluble residue was separated by filtration and (partially) dissolved in buffer with higher pH value. 2) The original isolated HA were individually dissolved in each buffer solution. It was confirmed, that in both cases the solubility of HA increases with pH value. The dependence of dissolved amount on pH can be characterized approximately by exponential function. HA and obtained fractions were analyzed by FT-IR and UV/VIS spectrophotometry. The results obtained for HA and these fractions are compared and discussed.
