Carbon-based films of organosilicones synthesized by a specific mode of plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) constitute a class of materials with a rich and varied scientific background. This class of materials possesses a special characteristic, which distinguishes it from other diamond-like carbon (DLC) – the ability to vary and control the degree of its organic/inorganic character and the network density (3D continuous random network) by the appropriate choice of fabrication variables. We can demonstrate changes of chemical and physical properties as a result of increased density of the random network, where the Young’s modulus increased from 13 to 122 GPa, hardness 2-14 GPa, refractive index (633 nm) 1.6-2.2, but the energy gap decreased from 2.5 to 1.0 eV with enhanced power. Such a variable material can be used to construct more sophisticated anisotropic films with layered or gradient structure to improve their adhesion and surface functionality. Nanocomposite coating is another type of anisotropic film. One way, how to control the surface topography very effectively, is a deposition of nanoparticles (metallic, polymer-like) of tunable size that is followed by deposition of overcoating film (metallic, carbon-based) forming the nanocomposite coating. This two-step process enables to control the surface topography and surface chemistry of nanocomposite coating independently. The carbon-based film of wide-range properties is a biocompatible material of a high application potential for electronic, optical, or mechanical devices, and e.g., may be used to capsulize a microchip (integrated circuit) or sensor that is intended to be implanted in the human body.
