Corrosion process of galvanized steel in model pore solution of pH 12.5 or 13.5 was studied by means of electrochemical corrosion methods. Saturated solution of Ca(OH)2 causes active corrosion of galvanized steel accompanied with evolution of hydrogen gas. Corrosion resistance of galvanized steel particularly in environment of pH 13.5 is very weak. The microstructure of the interfacial transition zone between hardened Portland cement paste and zinc surface was examined by using porosimetry and SEM methods. The porosity increases in the range of pores at approx. 10 ?Ým. Cr(III) as well as Cr(VI) based conversion coating reduces the gas evolution in solution of pH 12.5, while in pH 13.5 solution only the Cr(VI) coating is effective.
