Abstract: A R&D program based on the irradiation of test materials in different reactors has been initiated by EDF. Irradiation conditions in fast breeder reactors with fast neutron spectrum and light water reactors with mixed spectrum in a temperature range 300-400°C differ in neutron flux (higher for fast flux) and helium and hydrogen production rates (higher for mixed spectrum). Produced helium is responsible for high degradation of the ductility. To study the effect of the helium content, an irradiation of CW 316 material was performed in the SM experimental light-water reactor in Russia. Tensile specimens were irradiated in a position with a fast neutron flux (specimens with a hafnium shielding in order to remove the thermal neutrons) and in a position with both fast and thermal neutron fluxes (to produce high helium content) to dose levels 5 dpa and 15 dpa. The influence of the neutron spectrum on the tensile properties, sensitivity to IASCC and changes in microstructure was investigated by SSRT tests in PWR environment and by TEM observation. The tensile tests results obtained after irradiation of CW 316 at 300°C showed no helium influence on strengthening or loss of ductility after irradiation to 5 dpa while possible helium effect after irradiation to 15 dpa has been noticed. At higher dose the irradiation in mixed spectrum (high helium content) leads to lower dose for saturation of tensile properties and higher IASCC sensitivity expressed by brittle, almost intergranular, fracture in comparison to irradiation in fast spectrum. To elucidate the neutron spectrum effect, the TEM examination has been performed. The investigation was accomplished at the non deformed zone (specimen head) and at the deformed zone (specimen shank close to fracture surface) in the sample irradiated to 15 dpa in both spectra.
