In this study, the degradation grade of selected materials was correlated with spectral features of corresponding LIBS measurements. Magnesium was chosen for its applicability in automotive as well as in bone scaffolding, reinforcing iron bars play significant role in civil engineering. Samples were cut into small discs and immersed in corrosive environment under controlled conditions. Then, degraded samples were analysed using LIBS system, while the variation in the degree of corrosion products has great impact on the laser-matter interaction and hence on the properties of LIP. Furthermore, size of the ablation crater was estimated for individual samples and LIP characteristics (electron temperature and electron number density) were determined. LIBS results were additionally controlled using X-Ray Diffraction measurements.
