The aim of this review is to show how to control the crystallization behavior of poly(lactic acid) (PLA). PLA is a semi-crystalline polymer with slow crystallization kinetics. The reached degree of crystallinity determines PLA’s thermal stability, mechanical properties, gas barrier properties and hydrolysis rate. Industrial PLA resins crystallize differently depending on the D-lactide concentration, molecular weight and the presence of additives. Additionally, the kind of the applied processing method such as extrusion, melt mixing, melt spinning, thermoforming and injection molding may influence the final degree of PLA products due to the crystallization during cooling phases and the occurrence of the stress-induced crystallization as well. This review focuses on potentials of self-nucleation, nucleation stimulated by nucleating agents and annealing to modify crystallization behavior of PLA.
