The paper presents the reconstruction process of a single-track railway bridge with five spans, put into operation in 1961 on the Czech railway line. The reconstruction was realized in 2009. The original superstructure from precast post-tensioned beams was reinforced by composite slab-shaped channel with a continuous gravel ballast. Due to the increase of self-weight and the requirement for strengthening the structure for the effect of modern rail traffic loading, the structure was reinforced by free additional prestressing cables. Long-term monitoring of the structure has been carried out over a period of ten years to verify the project's assumptions in terms of service life and to demonstrate the suitability of the technology for the rehabilitation of similar prestressed bridges that were used quite extensively in the Czech Republic in the 1960s and 1970s. The second part of the paper also deals with the issues related to the evaluation of long-term monitoring of concrete bridges after reconstruction. The authors' findings are based on their experience gained during a ten-year monitoring of a railway prestressed bridge after reinforcement by free additional prestressing cables and new composite reinforced concrete slab.
