This paper elucidates the basic steps and methodologies involved in the accurate extraction of data from video recordings and prevention of information loss during video acquisition, fixation and further manipulation. Key steps detailed in the video analysis process include data acquisition, fixation, preparation for analysis, and analysis itself. Emphasis is placed on the technical limitations posed by video encoding, frame rates, and resolution, which can affect the precision of the analysis. Through the presentation of two unique case studies, this paper demonstrates the application of video analysis and photogrammetry in calculating vehicle and pedestrian speeds at the time of the accident. The first case highlights the impact of video compression on data accuracy, requiring synchronization of multiple camera sources and geodetic surveys for reliable analysis. The second case illustrates how subjective estimations, when combined with photogrammetry over large distances, can yield valid speed calculations. These studies emphasize the necessity of meticulous data handling and the importance of verifying results with supplementary methods to mitigate the influence of video limitations. This paper aims to guide experts in minimizing errors and maximizing the reliability of video-based accident analyses.
