Fabrication of an indented surface, i.e. nanostructures, can be used for an essential enlargement of the active area of microsensors. The microsensors are expected to gain high sensitivity (in spite of their miniaturization) due to the modification of their surface. The template-based electrodeposition method is an up-to-date low-cost technology for the nanostructure creation. It is based on using a non-conductive template which contains hexagonally arrayed nanopores. Metal nanostructures are created by galvanostatic electrodeposition of the required metal through the nanopores of the template. Metal ions are attracted to the cathode (a conductive substrate attached to one side of the template) leaving the non-conductive alumina. After the process of metal deposition, the alumina template is dissolved and the nanostructures are obtained. The nanostructures which can be created by the presented method are both nanotubes and nanowires. Nanotubes can also vary in the wall-thickness. The type of the structure depends on the diameters of the nanopores and on electroplating conditions under which the nanostructures are created.
