We report for the first time that maxumum lenght pseudo-random binary sequences (MLS) can be used to modulate the working temperature of screen-printed, micro-hotplate gas sensors. When the sensor operating temperature is modulated, the kinetics of the adsorption and reaction processes that occur at the sensor surface are altered. This leads to sensor response patterns that are chcaracteristic of the species present in the gas mixture [1]. MLS signals are used in the field of system identification because the impulse response of the system can be easily computed from the circular cross-correlation of the MLS and the response signals. Furthermore, given the pseudo-random nature of the MLS signals, measurements are repeatable. We will show how the use of the MLS signals allows for testing the sensor-gas mixture system under a wide spectrum of modulating frequencies. In conclusion, we have shown that estimating the impulse response of the sensor-vapor system can help to increase the selectivity of the sensors. We also shown that tin oxide can be printed onto micro-hotplates before etching the membranes with excellent yield.
