Original Abstract
The impact of portable analytical technologies has been growing rapidly influenced by factors such as rising medical care costs and need for rapid and on-site answers. Liquid chromatography has developed over the last almost half a century into a powerful analytical technique recognised as essential in many areas for everyday analysis, however with limited advances allowing its use as a portable analytical technique. In pursuing miniaturised and portable LC, we have chosen a concept based on a modular LEGO-like system with miniaturised, mostly off-the-shelf components, assembled on a microfluidic breadboard, allowing great flexibility of design. The key components include miniaturised modular microsyringe pumps, electrically actuated microfluidic switching valves and a sample injection valve, a capillary column and UV-LED detector [1,2,3]. We investigated several UV LED-based photometric detection designs with focus on capillary z-cells which offer an order of magnitude higher sensitivity compared to on-capillary detection, but also minimal size and weight [4,5]. Further we pursued end-capillary electrochemical detection using to complement UV LED-based photometric detection and allow for amperometric detection of non-absorbing compounds. We investigated an end-capillary gap-flow cell (gap-FC) designed to use exchangeable screen-printed electrodes held in a miniature gap-FC [4]. This presentation outlines the concepts of portable LC instruments, explains the reasons behind our approach based on a miniaturised modular platform, details selected technical aspects focusing on detection, and discussed future developments.
