English for Chemists II

Vocabulary for selected branches of chemistry (synonyms, antonyms) - organic chemistry, physical chemistry, inorganic chemistrsy, sophisticated devices and their operation, biochemistry, mathematical expressions. Grammar (e.g. gerund, future, articles, if-clauses, present simple in technical texts etc). Speaking (e.g. hobbies, leisure, future plans, eating habits, food...). Development of language skills: writing (e.g. instructions, notes, schemes, graphs and equations based on a text,...) , reading (individual information and summary - instrument operation etc.), listening (related to a topic discussed, particular information, general understanding, main ideas, summary,.......), speaking (exchanging info on nature of substances, hobbies, plans for future, acquiring information, explanation, interpretation of graphs and tables,....). Language work (cloze tests, matching definitions,.....) with the perspective to future completion of examination corresponding to CEFR B1 level.

Based on the faculty and university codes. CALL, CBT and collaborative learning are employed.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Completion of individual tests during the semester, satisfactory performance at seminars, succesfull completion of final credit test.

Course curriculum

Organic wonders in everyday life, personal plans for future; Acid, bases and salts, use of present simple in technical texts, wirting instructions; Laboratory equipment and laboratory safety, gerund, hobbies, likes and dislikes; Biochemistry, zero conditional sentences, eating habits; Analytical laboratory, articles - revision; Mathematical symbols; Physical chemistry, real and unreal conditional sentences, your life. Training of four skills in relation to topics discussed.

Aims

The aim is to enhance and develop students skills (reading, listening, writing, speaking), grammar and vocabulary and also building a firm base for future preparation for the examination corresponding to CEFR B1 level.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The attendance at seminars is monitored. The part-time students also participte in organized lessons and they can consult the course issues with teachers.
