Introduction to Biology of Man

Introduction into man's anatomy and physiology. Principles of interdisciplinary communication of an engineer and a medical doctor, basic specialized terminology and function of the particular systems and organs. Review of cellular level of living organisms, morphology and function of blood, circulation, respiration, urinary system, endocrine system and nervous system.

Knowledge of basic medical terminology, anatomy and physiology of man, basic physiological examination methods.

Knowledge at secondary school level and of completed subjects in the study area

Course curriculum

Lectures: General characteristics of living organisms. Cellular basis of living organisms.
Overview of the human morphology, the anatomic and physiological terminology. Physiological functions. Physiology of blood. Physiology of circulation. Physiology of respiration.Physiology of digestion and absorption. Physiology of energy balance and metabolism. Physiology of urinary system. Endocrine system. Nervous system. Applied physiology. Practicals: Physiology of circulation (heart sounds, pulse wave, blood flow in veins). Electrocardiography. Blood pressure. Ergometry. Digital model of aortic function. Physiology of respiration (spirometry). Metabolism (basal metabolic rate). Nervous system and sensoric organs ( reflexes, visual acuteness, accomodation, visual field).

Learning the principles of physiological processes in a human body. Learning basic terminology. The course is aimed at engineers specialised in medical devices.
