Contemporary Czech and International Art

A survey course about the chief tendencies in art after 1990. The overview of international art will be selective. The main focus of the lectures will be that on Czech art in wider context (the fall of the Iron curtain, the strengthening of globalization tendencies). Czech art will be also explored from the point of view of the local art institution developmnet (the relationship of Prague vs the regions, some important curators, gallery activities).

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will know the work of the important artists and artistic groups, they are aware of the role of regional art centers and they know their representants. They are able to reflect the development of contemporary Czech art in the international context.

Prerequisites

Students must have a general knowledge of 20th century art.

Course curriculum

1. Art now - a fast survey of the works of selected personalities active in the present art world.
2. Curators as artists and their impact on contemporary art (Daniel Birnbaum, Okwui Enwezor, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Nicolas Bourriaud, Catherine David, Maria Lind…). The consequences of the "bienalization" of art; the "global artworld."
3. Critical art and activism. A survey of tendencies, artists and particular projects concerned with social, political, and especially economical reality (street art, media interventions): reality hacking, tactical media – RTMark, Yes Men, Steve Lambert
4. Czech art in the early 90s: from the grey zone into mainstream; the changes of art management (galleries, criticism, art education). Art groups and their members.
5. The development of Czech art through the prism of awards, museum and private collections.
6. De-politization, re-politization. Two tendencies in Czech art of the 90s. Reverbation of the trancendetal tendencies in art. The critical and curating activities of the Ševčíks. Art activism at the beginning of the millenium (Pode Bal, Rafani, Jan Jakub Kotík, Guma Guar).
7. The "insiders" generation. Sentivity, decency, social issues, DIY aesthetics, local-specific art.
8. Czech painting since 1990s, artists, the debate on painting. Survey collective exhibitions supporting the medim. Collecting.
9. Photography: artist, curators.
10. Conceptual art
11. "regional schools" scene - Ostrava, Ústí nad Labem
12. the art scene in Brno since 1980s

Students will learn about the main tendencies in international and Czech art and its social context after 1990.
