Learning outcomes of the course unit

Connections between environmental problems with technology and civil engineering. Application of environmentally orientated principles, ideas and opinions into relation 'ecology - technology - culture - civil engineering'.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of ecological terminology (in level of the secondary school), ecosystems, elementar imagines about relation of human being and natural world, transcendental suggestions to influence of civil engineering to ecology of the countryside, defending and creating of environment, imagines about possibilities of ecological civil engineering and ecological living, knowledge of principles of sustainable development, general knowledge of ecological risks in world.

Course curriculum

1. Human environmental studies and ecology, agreements and differences. Importance of environmental science.
2. Philosophical, social and political continuities in environmental issues.
3. Summary of environmental risks. Global warming, natural resources, waste etc.
4. Environmental law and the economy - does it even exist? Fundamentals, analysis and solutions.
5. Environmental ethics. Ethics of respect for life. Biocentrism. Ecocentrism. Deep ecology.
6. Sustainable development, healthy life-style. Principles, importance and the idea of the relationship 'economically + ecologically = for all time'.
7. The ecological building - fiction or future reality? Buildings without ecological load?
8. Nature, culture and civil engineering. Differences between the natural world and human civilization. EIA - evaluation of the influence of buildings on the environment.
9. Civil engineering as a factor influencing environmental change.
10. Approaches of value systems to environmental problems and crisises. Traditionalism, conservativism and liberalism. Ecological dictatorship.
11. Ecology of the countryside, settlements, urbanism and buildings. Housing and healthy living.
12. Modern and postmodern perspectives on the nature/culture duality.
13. The crisis of modernity and the new period in our relationship with nature. Globalization and its consequences.

Aims

Specification of imagines about the relationship 'nature - human being - culture'. Principles of modern thinking about technology and natural world vith view to sustainable development. Understanding of ecological view to world, importance of ecological ethics, law, economy, culture and global life-style in relation to modern technological increase. Trying to indicating ways for future, perspectives of environmental life-style and environmental civil engineering.
