Spanish Pre-Intermediate - Part 1

The content of this course is the use of Spanish past tenses, mainly during the description of past events. The use of impersonal verbs and verb phrases to express obligation. The use of adjectives that describe moods. Related to people the description of physical aspect and parts of the human body is learnt. Basic vocabulary related to weather and forecast. Adjectives and vocabulary related to sports. The course focuses fairly in the use of past tenses to describe events of Spanish speaking countries.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Student is able to understand basic information if they are produced in a standard manner. Student understands spoken Spanish when someone is talking about someone else or about the inmdediate surroundings. Student is able to understand such things as restaurant menu. Student is able to hold a simple conversation whose main topic is telling information about him/herself and write simple letters describing him/herself and activities related to him/herself, learn to produce basic coherent texts that cover basic topics. The student has knowledge of the use of present tenses and therefore is able to express fluently ideas related to everyday activities. The knowledge the student has about past tenses allows the description past events in simplistic terms. The acquired level corresponds to A2 +according to the EFR (European Frame of Reference for Languages).

Prerequisites

Students should have knowledge of the level that corresponds to previous courses BYS1 and BYS12 so they can take profit of this course.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend upon the course unit as specified in article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations. Grammar, vocabulary is practised in an interactive way, with emphasis on conversation. Development of communication and listening skills using interactive audio-visual technologies. LMS Moodle and Smartboard.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Students attend classes regularly and actively participate in class (no more than 3 absences). If the student has more than 3 absences during the semester, then an end-of-course test must be taken. The above mentioned is valid unless otherwise specified by the tutor.

Week 1 - Unit 11 Expressing and describing impressions, conversation with friends at a party.
Week 2 - Unit 11 Past simple of irregular verbs, indefinite pronouns and adjectives.
Week 3 - Unit 12 Travelling and weather. Baggage reclaim.
Week 4 - Unit 12 Demostrative and possesive pronouns, verbs related to weather.
Week 5 - Unit 13 Describing everyday activities in the past. Health and the human body.
Week 6 - Unit 13 Imperfect past. The verb "to hurt"
Week 7 - Unit 14 Enrolling at University and studying foreign languages.
Week 8 - Unit 14 Direct and indirect object, conditional clauses.
Week 9 - Unit 15 Talking about someone else´s life using the reviewed past tenses.
Week 10 - Unit 15- Past simple. Comparatives and superlatives of adjectives.
Week 11 - Review of tenses.
Week 12 - Conversation about reviewed topics.
Week 13 - End of course test (if not specified otherwise by tutor.

Aims

The aim of this course is to teach the Spanish language and the basic communicative skills that are necessary to achieve the level A2+ according to the EFR (European Frame of Reference).
