History of Music in the 20th Century 2

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The student will be able to:
- name the major composers of the second half of the 20th century from the USA and describe their productions,
- name the major composers of USSR and describe their productions,
- explain the reasons for the post-war avant-garde and list its main representatives,
- describe the Polish school and its specifics, as well as name its representatives,
- name the major French composers of the second half of the 20th century and describe their productions,
- describe the history of electroacoustic music, its main streams and representatives,
- describe the current situation in music and name existing streams and significant Czech and world composers.

Prerequisites

The knowledge of basic concepts of musical acoustics, tempo, expression and dynamic signs, and musical instruments tuning is required.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in Article 7 of the BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.
- Lectures consist of an explanation accompanied by the listening of recordings and their analysis, photographs and score samples.
Participation in lectures is recommended.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The evaluation of study results follows the Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT and the Dean's Regulation on the Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT. Up to 100 points are given for the final oral examination, and it is necessary to earn at least 50 points for its successful completion. The exam is aimed at knowledge of the history of music on the European continent according to the syllabuses of the History of Music in the 20th Century 1 and 2.

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the evolution of music in the 20th century.
