Learning outcomes of the course unit

Completing the course of Organic Chemistry I students acquire basic knowledge of reactivity and stereochemistry of individual hydrocarbons from alkanes to aromatic compounds. The knowledge acquired is a base for completing the laboratory practice in organic chemistry.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the General Chemistry course contents as well as Basic inorganic chemistry. General knowledge of high-school Organic chemistry based on the text-book Chemie II.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of Lecture - 2 teaching hours per week, seminars - 3 teaching hours per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Completing the tutorial of Organic chemistry requires to pass successfully test with more than 50 points. Occasionally there are written tests screening gained knowledge. The final examination is written test (min. 60%).

Course curriculum

1. Basic principles. 2.+3. Alkanes and cycloalkanes, conformational analysis. 4. + 5. Stereochemistry. 5.+ 6. Alkenes. 7. Alkadienes, thermodynamic and kinetic control of reactions. 8. Principals of spectral analysis. 9. Alkynes 10.+11. Aromatic hydrocarbons.

Aims

The aim of the course is orientation in the basic knowledge for the understanding of structure and reactivity of organic compounds. The IUPAC nomenclature and base knowledge of organic compounds stereochemistry are the necessary prerequisites of the whole course. The course continues with the chemistry of individual types of hydrocarbon skeletons (alkanes and cycloalcanes, alkenes, alkadienes, alkynes and aromatic hydrocarbons), compiles and compares their properties.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Completing the tutorial of Organic chemistry requires the attendance and successfully passed class exams. The final examination is written test.
