Chemistry for Medical Applications

Original title in Czech: Chemie pro medicínské aplikaceFCHAbbreviation: BPCO_CHMNAcad. year: 2014/2015

Programme: Chemistry and Chemical Technologies

Length of Study: 3 years

Accredited from: 30.4.2012Accredited until: 31.5.2016

Profile

The FCH BUT “Chemistry and chemical technology” bachelor study program provides both theoretical knowledge and practical skills so as its alumni could proceed their study in a master program oriented on chemistry, material science and chemical-technological branch of chemistry or so as they can land positions in middle management or be employed as technical staff in industrial businesses.
The “Chemistry for medical applications” study branch is aimed at preparation of alumni for work in modern and perspective chemical, pharmaceutical, biomedical or biotechnological industries or in research and development. The outstanding feature of this study branch is its multidisciplinary character; therefore, students are educated in basic chemistry disciplines and, moreover, they also complete a series of biotechnology, biology, and engineering oriented courses. Complex nature of the branch leads to the curriculum being based on wide interdisciplinary theoretical and practical knowledge and skills complemented with essential language education, training in team collaboration and support of ability to work independently and solve particular problems of the dynamically developing branch flexibly.

Key learning outcomes

Recently introduced study branch extends curriculum of standard chemical study programs with disciplines essential for mastering chemical foundations oriented on medical applications; they include understanding of structure, methods of analysis, and production of various types of functional micro- a nanosystems inspired by natural processes and structures. The students are educated in the following fields of chemical disciplines applied to biomedicine and biotechnologies: production, structure and function of modern medically usable materials including bioproduction; control of engineering and bioengineering processes at micro- and nanolevels; and development of methods used for characterization of products and structures, namely of modern instrumental methods, microscopic technics etc. To fulfil requirements of practice, common chemically oriented curriculum must be extended with biologically and biotechnologically oriented courses and also with basics of mechanical and regulation engineering.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples

The students acquire basic knowledge and skills including laboratory working skills in the field of technical chemistry with the focus on inorganic, organic, physical and analytical chemistry, and chemical engineering. The above chemistry foundations represent a base for further specialization in two different orientations such as biological-biotechnological and technical branch. The graduates of the biological-biotechnological branch are educated in biology, physiology and biochemistry and also in the field of modern biotechnology, biomedicine, and molecular biology. The technical branch alumni get thorough knowledge of bioengineering and machine construction including measurement and control instruments operation. Moreover, the graduates are also familiarized with nano(bio)technologies and their application in manufacture of systems for various medical applications (diagnostics, carrier systems, regenerative medicine). The students are also trained in practical laboratory skills. Moreover, they are also provided essential language education in English for Chemists courses and trained in team collaboration and solution of problems occurring in practice. Complex nature of the branch leads to the curriculum being based on development of interdisciplinary theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in the fields of medicine, pharmacy, modern biotechnologies, nanotechnologies and specialized chemical manufacture.
The graduates of chemical-technical bachelor program are educated in basics of biology, biotechnology, bioengineering and other subjects delivered in the logical system of compulsory and semi-optional courses which provides the alumni with a good chance to land a job in biologically, chemically and biotechnologically oriented research where they can work as research and development assistants and after getting more professional experience even as development specialists. The graduates are also supposed to work in chemical, biotechnological and pharmaceutical plants as highly qualified workers and as specialists in lower or middle management controlling manufacture of products. The graduates are also supposed to work in service departments like quality control or registration divisions etc. They can become employees of especially pharmaceutical and biotechnological businesses focused on production of modern systems for applications in medicine; generally, they can also land jobs in cosmetics and food producing enterprises manufacturing carrier and delivery systems. Because of thorough education in chemical disciplines, the graduates can also work in the manufacture of fine chemicals.
Nevertheless, they can also apply to study either master programs dealing with medicinal materials and systems, nanotechnologies and nanobiotechnologies and their applications, or, due to thorough chemical background, also master programs focused on other branches of chemistry.

Entry requirements

Written entrance examination test checks ability/competence of applicants to study chemistry at university level. Applicants are given points for correct answers; a notional pass mark is applied to this examination. The applicants will be enrolled on condition of either successful passing the entrance examination or fulfilment of requirements for granting dispensation. Current information on admission regulations is available at http://www.fch.vutbr.cz/cs/zajemce-o-studium/bakalarske-studium.html.
