Course detail

Laboratory Classes in Inorganic Chemistry II

FCH-BC_ACH2_PAcad. year: 2020/2021

The course follows-up to an preliminary course and contents elementary synthetical tasks based on common inorganic matters preparation. Students train essential metods of preparation chemistry, learn basic principles of chemistry, acquaint oneself with chemical and physical matter properties, practise theoretical knowledges from lectures and exercises on actual problems solving and accustome oneself to present their results in the right way.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Work with literature, verifying of the theory by supported facts, acquisition of the basic working preparation methodology in not so complicated experiments, adoption of experimental skills and ability.

Prerequisites

Acquisition of the basic working methodology for the work in laboratory. Knowledge of Praktikum z anorganické chemie I and General and Inorganic Chemistry necessary.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of Laboratory exercise - 4 teaching hours per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

1. Compulsory participation [in the group given by the time/table]
2. Passing of specified lessons
3. Guidance of a laboratory notebook [checking of home preparation]
4. Elaboration and gift-over of the report sheets from each single project
5. Passing of tests submitted by the teacher of particular group
6. Passing of the final test/credit
Evaluation of the test: excellent [100%-90%], very good [89%-80%], good [79%-70%], satisfactory [69%-60%], sufficient [59%-50%], failed [49%-0%]
The average from the evalution of the report sheets, of the tests, of the final test and style of the work is the final evalution of the course.

Course curriculum

Students prepare cobalt, iron, copper, chromium, boron, sulfur and chlorine compounds.
Among the tasks are:
1) preparation of ammonium chloride
2) preparation of cobalt chloride hexahydrate
3) preparation of complex cobalt compounds
4) preparation of ferrous sulfate heptahydrate
5) preparation of iron oxide and iron aluminotermically
6) preparation of copper cementation
7) preparation of pyrophoric lead and boron trioxide
8) preparation of ammonium dichromate, preparation of chromium oxide
9) preparation of potassium chromate
10) preparation of potassium chlorate
11) preparation of trihydrogenboronic acid
12) preparation of trimethyl ester of boric acid

In the preparation of these compounds, the techniques adopted in the previous laboratory practice, such as filtration (under normal pressure, hot, under reduced pressure), crystallization (by solvent change, by reduction of temperature, concentration), recrystallization, decantation, distillation, reflux etc. Theoretically it follows the lecture and the exercises.

Work placements

Not applicable.

Aims

The hands-on discover chemical matters on based on the experiments and comparison of information with theoretical principles is meaning of this course. The task of the practical exercise is to inform students about the basic preparation methods and the chemical characters of matters, to allow them to check their theoretical readiness, embrace sufficient amount of chemical knowledge and engrave on mind forever. To learn to draw up a report about performed work and its evoluation.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Participation is mandatory (in the given schedule). The student's absence from the exercise is excluded only for serious reasons (illness, representation, etc.), student has to be apologized as soon as possible by e-mail and then confirmed by confirmation. The student is obliged to complete the missed assignment on a substitute term appointed by the assistant. The student is evaluated on the basis of the prescribed tasks, the protocols prepared for all laboratory tasks, and the preparation for the practice eg by the test (the necessary calculations and the theoretical knowledge related to the given task) are checked and evaluated. At the end of the semester, the student completes the final computational test at the scheduled date. The student's assessment also takes into account the way of his work in the laboratory.
