Methods for Solving Managerial Tasks

Students will primarily acquire knowledge and skills enabling effective analysis and transformation of source data into information usable in managerial decision-making, including subsequent interpretation (presentation) of results. At the same time, practical skills are developed using MS Office applications (with the main focus on MS Excel) for solving practical tasks and case studies.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will acquire knowledge and skills to support managerial decision-making using common office applications and effective work with data.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching takes place in the form of lectures, which have the character of explaining the discipline, content, terms, structure, methods and practical examples.
The exercises are focused on the development of practical skills in connection with the lectured topics.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

To get a Unit-course credit, you need to get at least 50% of the points divided between Activity (10 points), Tests (15 points), and Semester project including its defence (25 points).

The exam consists of a practical and an oral part, while the resulting classification of the subject is according to the ECTS scale.

Completion of the course for students with an individual study plan:
Development and defence of a Semester project for Unit-course credit;
Standard exam (practical and oral part).

01. System Approach for Solving Managerial Tasks (system and its modelling, analysis and simulation).
02. Use of Models in Managerial Practice (tabular, non-tabular and graphic models, engineering tables in MS Excel).
03. Use of MS Excel to Solve Managerial Tasks
04. Working with Data in MS Excel (Common tools and PowerPivot add-on)
05. Data Analysis in PowerPivot for MS Excel
06. DAX and Its Use
07. Working with Data in MS Power BI
08. Data analysis in MS Power BI
09. Advanced work with MS Power BI (own visualization, R language, ...)
10. - 12. Selected Optimization and Analysis Tasks (Case studies + involvement of experts from practice)
13. Interpretation of Outputs for Managers

Aims

To acquaint the listeners with the possibilities and tools that can be used in managerial decision-making with a focus on increasing the efficiency of the entire process based on effective work with data.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance is controlled in predetermined terms related to the project's implementation or tests. Attendance in lectures and exercises is not obligatory but recommended. Students prove their activity by completing tasks for which they earn points for assessment.
