The course presents a comprehensive introduction to interior design and realisation. Students are introduced to the issue of interior design of private and public interior. The course emphasizes the ability to apply the theoretical rationales in architectural practice, and the relation of overall interior composition to furnishing elements and craft detail. After the successful completion of this course, students will have the basic knowledge of creative interior design, methods of design, problem solving, used materials, and of relevant disciplines which the interior architects meet in their everyday practice.

Aims

The course presents a comprehensive introduction to interior design, from theoretical rationales to specific design assignments, and their application in architectural practice. The main aim is to teach the students to think and design in a comprehensive context of public or apartment interior. To introduce students to basic topics of interior design, to principles, criteria, methods and solutions, to acquire ability to identify the brief and to design the assigned interior at the concept phase of building design. The course content is applied in the design studios.
  • Students will acquire the basic theoretical rationales and specifics of interior design.
  • Students will learn the process of design and realisation of interior.
  • Students will have basic knowledge of materials used in interior design.
  • Students will have basic notion of the complexity of interior design, and the requirements of related building trades.
  • Completion of this course forms a basis for responsible work of broad range of architect´s services.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

The evaluation consists of semestral work and oral exam. The semestral work forms 50 % and the oral exam 50 % of the final grade.
Students have to elaborate a semestral work which complies with the topics from the lectures. Students practice the studied topics on practical examples from their surroundings. Semestral work contains three topics: student room, apartment, and public interior (description, floor plan, elevations). The semestral work requires ca 10 hours of work.
