Laboratory Classes in Laboratory Technics I

Laboratory code and safety measures, basic laboratory work - weighing, measuring volumes of liquids, filtration, heating, annealing, cooling, dehydrating, distillation, crystallization, decantation, sublimation, extraction, determination of physical variables - refracting index, melting point, density, pH. Simple tasks - fraction crystallization, preparation of the solutions with accurate concentrations, distillation of salt acid, separation of a mixture by precipitation, gas preparation.

Entry knowledge

Successful graduation of Legislation in Chemistry I and Basics of Laboratory Technique.
Knowledge of secondary school chemistry and basic mathematics.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

The laboratory notebook (control of preparation), report sheets, tests, style of the work, course-unit credit test.
Evaluation of the test: excellent [100%-90%], very good [89%-80%], good [79%-70%], satisfactory [69%-60%], sufficient [59%-50%], failed [49%-0%]
The average from the evalution of the report sheets, of the tests, of the final test and style of the work is the final evalution of the course.
The attendance is compulsory. In the case of illness confirmed with a doctor is substitution in other students group possible.

Aims

The target of the course is an acquisition of laboratory knowledge of the starting students - chemists.
Obtaining skills and a practical knowledge of basic operations that are used in the chemical laboratory.

Syllabus

1. Introduction. Laboratory safety and guidelines, laboratory notes. Laboratory equipment.
2. Measuring volumes of liquids, volumetric glass. Filtration - gravity filtration. Weighing.
3. Temperature measurement. Heating. Cooling.
4. Filtration - vacuum filtration. Saturated solution, solubility curve. Evaporation,
crystallization - types. Drying.
5. Filtration (Büchner funnel), decanting, dehydrating. Determination of melting point. Annealing.
6. Gas preparation in the laboratory. Sublimation.
7. Extraction. Determination of index of refraction. Determination of density. Weighing.
8. Preparation of solutions with accurate concentrations. Titration - byrettes, pH measuring.
9. Distillation of hydrochloric acid.
10. Fraction crystallization of mixture chromium(III) oxide,borax and sodium chloride.
11. Separation of a mixture by precipitation.
12. Compensation for illness, for holiday.
13. Course-unit credit test.
