Typology of Buildings

FAST-BHA021Acad. year: 2024/2025

Methods of building design with the consideration of an architectural concept - building typology and layout arrangement requirements. Rooms and floor areas requirements, building dimensions and zones, orientation to the cardinal points, operation schemes, interiors equipments and furniture. Elementary architectural and structural design principles of public buildings according to their types.
Acceptance of valid standards and regulations. The application of architectural and structural design principles, present economic relations, energy efficiency requirements and environmental demands. Design principles for barrier-free civic buildings and their neighbouring outdoor spaces. Design of residential houses is completed in following practical classes.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Successful conclusion of the course requiers:

  • completing exercises with compulsory attendance and granting credit,
  • passing a written exam (after obtaining the credit).

Extent and forms are specified by guarantor’s regulation updated for every academic year.

Aims

To gain basic knowledge and experience in conceptional work within the frame of planning residential and some selected public buildings. Subject graduate will be able conceptual work in the process of planning with regard to artistic and compositional requirements. Student will acquire and accept typological and ergonomic principles of layout design and dimension solution, standards, regulations and specifications for barrier-free solutions of building interiors and their exteriors.

Syllabus

1. Introduction – design area dependence on tenant physiology. Residential houses – layout design solution, dwelling zones, cardinal point orientation from the point of view requirement of indoor climate, placing on the construction site. 2. Residentials rooms. House equipment and accessories. Vertical and horizontal communication areas. 3. Basic design rules for entrance space, wardrobes, bedrooms, children’s rooms and related and storage spaces. 4. Ergonomics design principles of hygienic services and technical equipment. 5. Principles of ergonomics in kitchen, design of dining and living room. 6. Barrier-free design of building interior and exterior. 7. Parking design, parking systems and parking garages. 8. Basic design principles of temporary accommodation. 9. Rules design of public catering. 10. Design of educational facilities – nursery schools, primary schools – layout design. 11. Basic rules for designing of administrative buildings. 12. Building design for business and services, multipurpose houses – general principles layout and typology solutions. 13. Basic design principles of sports buildings and physical education.

1st - 12th week
Task 1:
Work out an assessment of present family house min. 5 + kk – min. from 5 aspects e.g.: http: www.archiweb.cz
Criterions (min 5):
orientation to the cardinal points (situation of a building in terrain), architectural integration to surrounding built-up area.
Analyse design layout, review area of single rooms (cubic capacity in attics), calculate daylighting, evaluate ergonomics (kitchen, bathroom, area of communication, cabinet..) and appraise amount of storage space in single rooms.
Compare with rules (recommended literature, lectures…)
Complete with pictures, alternatively sketches, calculations.
Task 2:
Work out an assessment of assigned public building and evaluate from point of view of layout, cardinal point orientation, placement on construction site, barrier-free design interior and exterior…

Output:
Every assignment will hand in as separate writing work completed with layouts, pictures, alternatively by own designs, sketches.
Work out in size A4/A3 – ribbon bookbinding.
