Profile

The study area “Microelectronics” (M-MEL) in the master’s degree programme “Electrical, Electronic, Communication and Control Technology” (EEKR) at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication (FEEC) BUT aims to prepare MSc graduates for the area of microelectronic engineering with a profound knowledge of theory, design and technology of integrated circuits, electronic systems and appliances used in diverse areas of electronics and electrical engineering. Students can specialize mainly in the design and computer simulation of integrated circuits, design of electronic systems and applications of microelectronic circuits in instrumentation, technology of integrated circuits and electronic systems, design and manufacturing of printed circuits, surface mount technology, testing and measurement technology. Moreover, students acquire relevant knowledge of information and communication technologies.
The graduates of this study area in the master’s degree programme find employment mainly in the design, development and production of electronic and electrotechnical appliances, devices and systems, custom-made integrated circuits and semiconductor devices, systems with surface mount printed circuit boards. At the same time, this branch aims to prepare graduates able to deal with challenging technical problems related to business and service of diverse electronic appliances. Instruction is ensured primarily by the Department of Microelectronics (ÚMEL) at FEEC BUT.
The study of this branch can be commenced only after the students have successfully completed the bachelor’s degree programme and passed the bachelor’s final state examination, preferably in a programme focusing on electrical engineering and information technology.

Key learning outcomes

The graduates dispose of good knowledge: in the design and technology of ICs, electronic systems and instruments for applications in various fields of electronics and electrical engineering, in analogue and digital signals, materials and technology processes, namely concentrated to microelectronics and applications of electronic circuits and systems. The area of knowledge focuses also to design and computer simulation of ICs, design of electronic systems and application of microelectronic systems for instrumentation, technology of ICs and electronic systems, design and manufacturing of PCB and SMT boards, testers and measurement instruments, in economy and manufacturing planning. Their profession can be adapted to information and communication technologies.
The graduates are qualified in many specialized areas of microelectronics, in design, simulation, technology, production and applications of ICs, in design and in applications of technology for manufacturing of electrical apliences (communication techniques, instrumental electronics, audio and video techniques, analogue and digital multimedial signal processing).
The graduates dispose also with the related knowledge of some areas of telecommunication techniques and applied informatics. In all of these branches they are able to apply efficiently and to exploit effectively modern computing, measuring and automation techniques. Owing to wide fundamentals of the application-oriented-study branche there is ensured high adaptability of the graduate for most the requirements of his future practice.
The graduates of the magister study branche can be applied in design, construction, applications and services of a wide spectrum of electronic institutions, mainly in the branch of microelectronics. In all of these institutions they are able to work also as the technical-managers in industry and services.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples

The graduates of the study area “Microelectronics” have a broad knowledge and skills in the design and technology of integrated circuits, electronic systems and devices used in diverse fields of electronic and electrical engineering, analogue and digital signals, materials and production processes, with a strong orientation towards microelectronics and application of electronic circuits and systems. Students acquire knowledge of the design, computer simulation of integrated circuits, design of electronic systems and applications of microelectronic circuits in instrumentation technology, integrated circuits technology, electronic systems technology, design and manufacturing of printed circuits, surface mount technology, testing and measurement technology, economy and organization of production. Within optional courses, students acquire knowledge of information and communication technologies. The graduates are qualified in design, simulation, technology, production and application of integrated circuits, in design, technology and application of electrical appliances, instrumentation, testing and measurement technology, analogue and digital signal processing. A broad scope of applications-oriented study ensures high adaptability of graduates to specific requirements of their future professions, also in other areas of electronics and electrical engineering. The graduates can work as microelectronics and technology specialists in diverse areas of design and production of integrated circuits and electrical appliances, in construction, operation, service and maintenance of sophisticated electronic and electrical appliances, devices and systems. In all these areas, they can also assume executive and management positions.
