Building Material Engineering

Original title in Czech: Stavebně materiálové inženýrstvíFASTAbbreviation: MAcad. year: 2009/2010

Programme: Civil Engineering

Length of Study: 4 years

Profile

The aim of the four-year bachelor's study programme "Civil Engineering" with the Building Materials Engineering specialization is the mastery of a comprehensive base of essential theoretical knowledge and general technical knowledge from the whole field of civil engineering as well as the mastering of basic knowledge mainly from the specialised fields of production technology and other specialised building disciplines, and in addition, the obtaining of a higher level of knowledge and orientation in the issues of this field via the extension of the student's theoretical, technological and civil engineering knowledge. The specialised knowledge gained by the graduate will enable understanding of the issues involved in this specialization in a wider context and thus increase the graduate's ability to work in real life situations.

The evidence of achieving the final study goal, which is to master the subject matter of the course and develop a more complex independent approach to the solution of problems, will be the completion and successful defence of a bachelor's thesis on a set topic from the field of either production technology or the application of building materials. In the partial objectives of the course, the future graduates are also gradually provided with a higher level of theoretical training, mainly in the areas of the structure of silicates, building physics and thermodynamics, which will help them to acquire more complex knowledge in connection with their practical training in laboratories. Here, students learn the properties and experience the testing of principal building materials, mainly mortars, ceramics and special purpose ceramics, concrete, lightweight materials, insulating and special purpose insulating materials, timber and metals, and therefore the linking of practical and theoretical knowledge will achieve the partial objective of the course, which is to provide the graduates with more complex knowledge and skills.
The emphasis placed on the connection of theoretical and experimental training linked with the students' exposure to real production technologies during excursions of specialist interest is based on the aim of equipping the graduates with comprehensive practical knowledge and skills. In addition to this, the applications of building materials and substances in structures are taught, including pre-cast blocks and their assembly, diagnostic methods and practical demonstrations on site which support the basic goal of the course - the employability of the graduate in the real world.
