Brno University of Technology has by the very nature of its existence three fundamental roles: to provide quality education, to push the boundaries of human knowledge through scientific and research activities and to fulfil its role in the so-called third role.
We are aware that all our activities have a society-wide impact and influence not only the world we live in now, but also the conditions in which future generations will operate. That is why we must respect and actively promote the principle of sustainability in all our activities.
We want to contribute to the mitigation or elimination of the negative effects of the current development of human society and contribute to the achievement of sustainable development as defined in the Green Deal. We also want to coordinate our activities systematically with regard to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which take into account the social, environmental and economic dimensions.
Sustainability Strategy
Ensuring sustainable development within the university is one of the priorities that we pay great attention to at BUT. At the management level, the Vice-Rector for Artistic Activities and Sustainability is directly responsible for this issue. It is our intention that the principles of sustainability are not only reflected in the day-to-day operations of the university, but are also part of the long-term plans. We have therefore created a Sustainability Strategy for the BUT, which focuses on four main areas: education; research and creative activities; the social role and governance of the university.
The BUT Sustainability Strategy is being developed through the support of the Czech Recovery Plan under the project Acceleration of Green Skills and Sustainability at BUT - registration number: NPO_VUT_MSMT-2143/2024-5.

Teaching and education
We educate our students in such a way that they become not only experts in their respective fields, but also personalities who promote a responsible and respectful approach to the world around them.
In order to share our experience in promoting sustainability principles with others, we became part of the UNILEAD (University Leaders in SDG) project in 2022. 24 public universities from the Czech Republic are participating, with the intention of inspiring each other in implements the SDGs in their operations.
We have been involved in the project mainly at the level of co-developers of the strategy in the area of energy management and responsible purchasing (public procurement). The recommendations that emerged from this sharing of good practice are available on the website of Masaryk University, the main coordinator of the project.
