The Principal Investigators were resposible for the development of bridge structures using what are now known as `stress-ribbon' decks, i.e. thin precast prestressed concrete elements post-tensioned together by and supported on internal prestressing cables that are anchored into the abutments. In the design of the Lake Vranov Bridge, a stress-ribbon deck was erected in the shape of an arch by combining the erection and support of the deck with suspension cable and stay cable technologies using relativecomplex suspension and erection systems. Based upon the success in realizing these structures, funding is sought to extend the applicability of these new structural forms to long-span bridges, to bridges which are curved in plan, and bridges that requirevariable width of the deck, using both precast and cast-in-place concrete construction as well as various combinations of internal and external tendons.
