The Hochbrücke (Highway Bridge) in Wismar was built in 1970 as the longest prestressed concrete bridge in the former GDR. It is 396 m long, comprises of 15 fields, which rest on deep foundations. The bridge as a part of the road B 105 leads the traffic across railway tracks, a street and the Mühlenteich (engl. = mill pond). After reunification of Germany the Hochbrücke was checked in the course of the exploration of the state of bridges in Mecklenburg-Pomerania concerning damages due to alkali silica reaction (ASR). In 2001 the bridge was investigated in detail by the Building Department of University Rostock, and the damages were assessed as reparable. The required remediation work was carried out in 2005. Six years later the Federal Ministry of Transport Building and Urban Development of Germany has issued Instructions for inspection and assessment of old bridges, that were erected with the tempered prestressing steel endangered by stress cracking corrosion (SCC). The obligatory investigations of the presstresing steel elements have been performed in September 2011. It turned out that a great number of the prestressing steel wires with smaller cross-sections had corrosion scars. - In the paper the respective investigations and the evaluation of the findings are reported and the decision of the responsible Road Construction Administration is outlined.
