This paper deals with preparation of refractory material made by foaming method and measuring the heat transfer properties of prepared material. The material was made by mechanical foaming of the matrix mixture. Basic matrix mixture was composed of kaolin, aluminate cement and tap water. In another place foam was prepared by foaming of a surfactant. The matrix mixture and the foam were mixed together and a foam stabilizing component was added. Diatomite was used as the stabilizing component in our work. These mixtures were molded into a casting bed, dried at room temperature and fired. Prepared materials were characterized by SEM and XRD and DTA-TGA analysis. SEM had shown delamination of aggregates of kaolin because change of size was observed from the range of µm to tenths of µm. The XRD and DTA-TGA has shown structural changes which materials undergo during the firing. Sample for measuring the heat transfer was prepared from the final product. The result corresponds with theoretical behavior based on heat conduction. That means that our process can be used for approximate determination of thermal conductivity at elevated temperatures.
