This paper reviews the background, methodology and standardization of calibration of acoustic emission sensors. The paper introduces the basic problem of AE sensor calibration, and presents basic principals of acoustic emission sensors and comparison of their typical sensitivities. The paper goes on to describe the primary and secondary method of AE sensor calibration. The reciprocity methods of absolute calibration are described in detail and compared. This work was carried out in the context of the AE sensor calibration system at FEEC BUT Brno, Czech Republic. The selection of instruments was limited by instruments used by Hatano at al. The reciprocity method of absolute calibration was realized in practice with a vector signal analyzer HP 89410A. As a transfer medium for wave propagation, a large steel block was used. The results are presented for the transducer UT 1000. The characteristics correspond up to 0,5 MHz with characteristics obtained from manufacturer Physical Acoustic Corporation. The whole experiment was driven by software developed in LabVIEW 7.1 by National Instruments. The program and measuring apparatus enable primary reciprocity calibration of AE sensors based on NDIS 2109-91.
