Many of the most remarkable structural designs of lightweight construction materials feature micro- and nano-cellular pores in a polymer matrix reinforced by nanoparticles. Vat 3D printing techniques such as masked stereolithography apparatus (M-SLA) could easily combine both aspects in artificial layouts with good structural control across several length scales. However, addition of nanoparticles to photocurable resin is interesting from other points of view, e.g., for the colour-pigmentation of these resins. Growing demand for the preparation of nanocomposites using Vat 3D printing technology requires further study of the kinetics of the ongoing photopolymerization reaction. The presence of nanoparticles (NPs) affects the photopolymerization from both the physical and chemical point of view. The physical effect is caused primarily by the ability of NPs to absorb or scatter light. On the other hand, the chemical effect is given by the chemical interaction between the surface of the NPs and the photopolymerizable resin. Semiconductive metal oxide nanoparticles were found to provide photoinitiating effect, however, the influence of photoinitiating NPs on the printability and in low-power UV printers such as M-SLA was not fully characterized yet. This study investigated the curing and post-curing kinetics of a commercial free-radical photopolymerized acrylate-based resin filled with various NPs, mostly metal oxides, e.g., Fe3O4, ZnO or Al2O3-doped ZnO (AZO). The Jacobs working curves, real-time FTIR, photo-DSC, photo-rheology and thermomechanical properties of the printed bodies revealed that the photoactive NPs can accelerate the curing kinetics, but only at low NPs concentration. The results were compared to non-photoactive NPs to judge on the physical effects brought about by the particles separately.
