Study aims
The aim of the study is to acquire interdisciplinary skills and acquire the necessary knowledge to enable graduates to obtain an education that is in limited supply in the labour market. This is particularly necessary given the development and scope of the electrical engineering disciplines in the world today and the fact that English has become a global communication tool.
The aim of the study programme is for graduates to acquire a basic overview and knowledge of the field of electrical engineering and communication technology and, above all, to be equipped with C1 Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) level competence in a professional language.
Practical skills and knowledge will focus in particular on the use of the special variety of English used in electrical engineering and communication technology. This functional variety of English is based not only on knowledge of the language but also, and especially, on practical skills in electrical engineering and communication technology, so that users of specialist English are practically familiar with electrical engineering and communication technology. In addition to language, the programme subjects also include technical subjects with exercises and laboratories, so that graduates have a practical idea and can adequately describe and convey it in English. English focused on electrical engineering and technical communication disciplines is extremely necessary with the current rapid development and use of electrical engineering and communication disciplines. For the last ten years, there has been a single degree programme in the Czech Republic focused on English in electrical engineering and computer science, run at Brno University of Technology, which this programme builds on, but with an emphasis on wider application in technical practice.
Graduate profile
Profession characteristics
The main aim of the bachelor degree programme English for Practice in Electrical Engineering and Communication Technologies is to prepare professionals in this specific field endowed with a high level of language skills. Apart from the language tuition and relevant technical courses, students will practice managerial skills and broaden their awareness of the cultural and geopolitical aspects. These in combination with English for specific purposes, electrotechnical background will provide graduates with qualifications for the work in industry, administration, research and development, management, multinational corporations, and specialized translations.
Study plan creation
The curriculum is composed in such a way that the students are trained to gradually master the English language in subjects Practical English and at the same time receive training in electrical engineering and information technology. The lecturing in subjects focused on electrical engineering and communication technology will be in English (70%), only summarizing and discussion will be held in Czech (30%). This will further improve the students‘ language skills. The subjects dealing with theoretical linguistics and translation studies require a higher level of knowledge, and are, therefore, predominantly included in the curriculum for the second and third year of study.
Availability for the disabled
All lecture rooms at the FEEC BUT allow disabled access; students, however, must meet the medical standards to acquire the necessary electrotechnical qualifications. In laboratory classes and practicals, students are required to independently operate measuring instruments and related equipment without endangering human health or damaging property.
