Study aims

The two-year study programme in English COMMUNICATIONS AND NETWORKING (MPA-CAN) in the master’s degree programme at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication (FEEC) BUT aims to educate MSc graduates with a profound theoretical understanding and practical knowledge of modern telecommunications and information technologies who are also qualified in light-current electronics and communication technology and are able to apply this knowledge in design of new appliances and systems. The core courses include subjects in theoretical and practical information technology, multimedia, communication technology and electronics.
The study of this programme can be commenced only after the students have successfully completed the bachelor’s degree programme and passed the bachelor’s final state examination, preferably in a programme oriented towards electrical engineering or information technology.
Instruction in this programme of study is ensured primarily by the Department of Telecommunications (UTKO). The offer of optional courses along with an individual semestral project and the thesis enable students to focus more closely on the area of mobile and fixed communications, metallic, optical or wireless networks, modern network technology appliances, telecommunication services, multimedia, internet technologies and their services, Internet of things IoT, smart technology, security methods and high-speed multimedia transmission. Students are also introduced to knowledge of digital filters, signal processors, multimedia signal processing and design of electronic circuits and systems. The graduates will be able to work with user interfaces, use parallel processes in operation systems and ensure security of information systems. Depending on their individual choice, students will be thoroughly acquainted with digital methods of processing and transmission of speech, sound and image signals. They will be introduced to the design and realization of computer networks, database systems and distributed applications so as diverse information technologies. In order to improve the students’ understanding of theory, courses within theoretical extension in higher Mathematics are provided. Students can also choose technical courses from the programme MPA-TEC Telecommunications provided by the Department of Radio Electronics (UREL), English for Enginneers and management courses from the Faculty of Business and Management.

Graduate profile

The graduate will possess detailed knowledge in the field of communication and networking technologies. He is both well-provided with theoretical knowledge of communication and information systems and familiar with their design, the electronic design itself, applications, services, smart systems, Internet of Things IoT, surveillance and measuring systems. The spectrum of his theoretical and practical knowledge embraces properties of transmitted multimedia signals and data, their processing and subsequent technical realization of communication and information systems. He is familiar with the structure and provision of various services in mobile and fixed communication and computer networks.

Profession characteristics

The graduate is qualified to solve problems of communication and information technologies. He is sufficiently knowledgeable in problems of related radio communication design, instrumentation and applications of microelectronic circuits. Thanks to the good theoretical foundations coupled with sufficiently universal education in applications-oriented studies he can be expected to accommodate to all concrete requirements of his future professional practice also in other areas of electronics and electrical engineering.
Graduates in this programme of MSc studies will find application in the research, development, design and operation of challenging communication and information technologies. They can participate in the development of new generations of services in classical and mobile communication and computer networks. In addition to their technical knowledge of problems, they will be prepared to perform higher executive and managerial functions. Their sufficient theoretical education provides the required basis for possible enlargement of their knowledge in doctoral studies.

Study plan creation

The courses in the study area MPA-CAN are rewarded by so called credits. A credit corresponds to the average weekly hour load per student enrolling for a particular course. Students earn credits in particular courses only after they have met the prescribed requirements or passed an examination under conditions defined by the Study and Examination Regulations of BUT, relevant Directives of the Dean of FEEC BUT and specific structure and contents determined in every course. Students are obliged to earn the minimum of 120 credits in the two-year master’s degree programme while in particular categories of courses the following minimum numbers of credits have to be earned:
– 41 credits in compulsory courses (including both semester projects)
– 30 credits for writing, submitting and the acceptance of the thesis
– 25 credits in optional courses A
– 17 credits in optional courses B
– 7 credits in elective courses
for a total of at least 120 credits. If the required number of credits in one category of courses is not earned, it cannot be compensated for by exceeding the number of credits necessary in a different category.
Compulsory courses (including both semester projects) in MPA-CAN are completed during the semesters and years as prescribed in the study plans. If students do not complete a compulsory course in the way prescribed, they have to enrol for it in the following year of study.
Optional courses A include technical subjects within the scope of their study area which enable students to focus more closely on their areas of interest. Students choose these courses in a given academic year from the current offer of MPA-CAN, respecting the rules defined in the study plans (above all, the obligatory enrolment for the minimum number of subjects required in each category). The choice of these courses depends on students’ professional interests and the discipline within MPA-CAN that they want to specialize in.
Students choose Optional Compulsory courses A in such a way that they earn the required (or higher) number of credits with a prescribed structure by the end of their master’s degree programme.
Optional courses B include technical subjects from magister study MPA-TEC (Telecommunications) from Department of Radio Electronics (UREL). In these subjects, students acquire knowledge of other disciplines than those embraced by their programme of study. Students choose these courses from their offer which can be found in the study plans in this handbook – respecting the rules which are also defined there – in a way that they earn the required number of credits. For a suitable choice of Optional courses B, the same rules as for Optional courses A apply including the possibility to consult the study counsellor.
To Optional courses A belongs also courses in higher Mathematics, which increase the students’ theoretical knowledge of these disciplines. Students choose these courses from their offer compiled by MPA-CAN.
Elective courses consist of English for Engineers to improve language skills in communications and networking and manager courses from the Faculty of Business and Management.

Availability for the disabled

All lecture rooms at the FEEC BUT allow disabled access; students, however, must meet the medical standards to acquire the necessary electrotechnical qualifications. In laboratory classes and practicals, students are required to independently operate measuring instruments and related equipment without endangering human health or damaging property.
