Study aims

The aim of the study is to equip students with knowledge of theoretical, technical, and related disciplines in the field of architecture and urban design, as well as an adequate set of technical competences and skills. The range and level of skills and knowledge is defined so that the graduates may be able to hold the post that require the independent solution of complex constructional and technical, architectural and/or urban design problems. In practice, the graduates are supposed to attain the positions that require the ability to perform demanding technical tasks associated with building design. The graduates may attain the position in design offices, in public administration, and similar positions.

Graduate profile

The graduates of the bachelor’s study programme Architecture and Urban Design have an adequate range of up-to-date knowledge in the field of architecture, urban planning, and construction industry. The programme focuses on mastering the technical and theoretical knowledge of architecture, urban design and urban planning in their complex coherence. This knowledge is complemented with the related human sciences that are the essential basis for the quality performance of architect’s practice. The graduates of the bachelor’s study programme are able to interpret their designs and place them in the social context. The graduates are able to apply the knowledge gained in the individual courses into practice.

Professional knowledge
The graduates will have the professional knowledge required for the field of study Architecture and Urbanism. In terms of the prospective employment, the graduate will have the knowledge defined by the Czech Chamber of Architects (CCA) adequate for the level of bachelor’s degree. If the graduates deepen their knowledge in the master’s study programme, their knowledge will comply with the requirements for the CCA certification, namely in the field of Architecture, and in the field of Urban Planning.
The extent of the graduate’s knowledge is based on the CCA Certification Code (§4 a §5), namely:
– comprehensive knowledge of the history and theory of architecture,
– comprehensive knowledge of the history and theory of urban design (town development) and urban planning,
– comprehensive knowledge of the related arts disciplines,
– comprehensive knowledge of the technical disciplines
– comprehensive knowledge of the physical problems and technologies and of the functions of buildings,
– comprehensive knowledge of the relationships between architecture and urban design, urban planning and the process of designing buildings,
– comprehensive knowledge of the technology how to design built environment in relation to health care, nature and landscape components of environment, with aim to improve the quality of life,
– basic knowledge of the related human sciences,
– extensive knowledge of the methods of investigation and preparation of the brief for a design project,
– comprehensive knowledge of the urban planning process and urban design process,
– extensive knowledge and understanding of the culture, as one of the fundamental influences on the quality of land-use planning documentation, land-use planning data, and/or urban design plans and projects,
– extensive knowledge of industries, organisations, regulations and procedures involved in the designer’s profession,
– developed knowledge of professions, industries, technologies, regulations and procedures involved in the urban planning profession.

Professional skills
The graduates of the bachelor´s study programme will gain all professional skills required for the field of Architecture and Urbanism for the bachelor’s level. The range of skills is defined by the graduate’s prospective employment as an independent employee in the design office focused on architecture and urban design. The graduates acquire skills that comply with the CCA requirements on the education in the field of Architecture and in the field of Urban Planning (the CCA Certification Code, §4 and §5):
– competences to create architectural projects that satisfy both aesthetic and technical requirements,
– competences to understand the relations between people and architectural projects, and between architectural projects and their environment, and to the need to relate architectural projects and the spaces between them to human needs and scale,
– competences to understand the profession of architect and the role in society, in particular in preparing briefs that take into account of social factors,
– competences to understand building design, and constructional and engineering problems associated with building design,
– necessary design skills to meet users’ requirements within the constraints imposed by cost factors and building regulations,
– competences to create land-use planning documentation and land-use planning data, as well as urban design projects that comply with the natural, cultural, social, economic, technical, and aesthetic requirements,
– competences to understand the relationship between people and urban environment, and between urban environment and landscape, to understand the need to compose various spaces and environment to the human needs and scale,

Profession characteristics

The graduates of the bachelor’s study programme (BSP) Architecture and Urban Design have acquired the up-to-date scientific and technical knowledge integrated in a complex of interdependencies. They are able to apply the knowledge gained in individual courses to solve the problems of the given field of study. They are able to hold the positions that require independent solution of complex construction and technical or managerial problems. They will find employment in technical and managerial positions that require the ability to work independently on demanding technical tasks associated with building design. They will find work in design studios, in public administration, and at positions with similar technical requirements. In exceptional cases the BSP graduates may become a certified architect under the conditions defined in §3, paragraph 5, the CCA Certification Code, however, they may become an employee in an architectural office or studio working under the professional supervision by a certified person. The BSP graduate may work as construction supervisor as defined in the Building Act.

Fulfilment criteria

The final state exam in BSP Architecture and Urban Design has two parts: the defence of the bachelor’s thesis and the oral exam. Both parts are evaluated using A-F grading scale in accordance with the Study and Examination Rules of BUT.
The oral part of the final state exam verifies the graduates’ knowledge in the field of theory of architecture, namely the history of architecture and the development of towns/urban design (corresponding with the theoretical courses of the study programme profile: History of Architecture 1-5, Urban Design History, Theory of Architecture 1 – Introduction, Architectural Heritage Conservation). Further, it verifies the knowledge of technical requirements on the design of buildings and their complexes, namely legislation, standards, operation, structural design, construction, and others (corresponding with the courses of the study programme profile: Building Elements 1-3, Building Project, Current Construction Techniques, Basics of Building Physics, Design of Buildings 1-2, Designing Towns).
The requirements on the defence, evaluation, and the overall evaluation of the final state exam are given by the Study and Examination Rules of BUT, Part 2, Article 23, 25, 26, and 27. Students may take the final state exam when they have performed all their study duties, i.e. obtained the required credits determined by the study plan to successfully complete the bachelor’s study, and submitted their bachelor’s thesis within the set deadline.

What degree programme types may have preceded

The graduates of the programme Architecture and Urban Design can directly continue their studies in the master’s study programme Architecture and Urban Design at FA BUT. The graduates may also continue their studies in other master’s study programme in the field of study of Architecture and Urbanism, at FA BUT or at other universities.
