Information for students
Enabling of individual teaching activities for final year students
According to the decision of the Government of the Czech Republic dated April 14, 2020, universities will be able to carry out individual activities for students in their final year of studies[1] from Monday, April 20, 2020, in groups of a maximum of 5 students. This may concern individual consultations, examinations and completion of theses. It is up to the Dean/Head of the Institute to decide which activities at the particular faculty/institute will be available to students.
The final year students will also have the opportunity to use libraries of limited scope to borrow and return book loans. The book loans will be prepared upon a request via the web form (see https://formulare.lib.vutbr.cz/vypujcky/). For the first half of these year, any penalties for the late returning will be forgiven. More detailed information can be found on the BUT Libraries Portal https://www.vutbr.cz/knihovny and on the pages of individual faculty libraries.
Information for foreign students studying in the Czech language
However, the above-mentioned enabling of teaching is difficult to implement for foreign students, the vast majority of whom are Slovak students. The obstacle can be not only on the side of the Czech Republic, but also in the home country of these students, when the local rules do not allow them to travel, or they are subject to quarantine requirements. The BUT management believes that the situation of these students will be resolved by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports soon. If, however, some form of restriction persists for them until the beginning of the next academic year, BUT will allow these students to enrol in non-completed subjects next academic year, considering these subjects as being first enrolled. The fulfilment of these subjects would then not be checked while advancing to the next academic year.
Distance learning
The courses are taught in a distance form where possible. For a number of courses at BUT this form of instruction fully replaces contact teaching, but it always depends on the particular subject of a particular faculty or institute. Teachers have already informed you about the form of teaching in your subject.
Subjects that cannot be taught fully in a distance form (e.g. laboratories, studios):
Completion of teaching for subjects that could not be taught fully in a distance form during the closure of universities will take place after the necessary extent of the operation of the universities is recovered. The specific schedule is set by the Dean of the Faculty/Head of the Institute. In justified cases, the faculty (institute) will allow students to complete these courses until the end of the fall semester of the 2020/2021 academic year. Follow the information at your faculties and institutes.
Special attention will be paid to the subjects of final years of study. It is our priority that the final year students can complete the missing subjects as soon as possible after the recovery of the university operation and subsequently take the state final examinations.
Obtaining credits
For the subjects, where all teaching takes place in a distance form and it is possible to fulfil all the conditions for obtaining credits in a distance form, you will be able to obtain credits at the original dates set by the academic year schedule. For the subjects, where some part of teaching will have to be completed or some of the credit requirements will have to be met only after the obstacles to personal instruction have been removed, you will be informed of the deadline for the credits by each teacher as soon as it is clear when the current limitations will end.
A timetable of the academic year, examination period
BUT management released the following update of the schedule of the 2019/2020 academic year:
- The examination period for the students, whose study plan does not include the state final examination this academic year is extended until September 30, 2020.
- The examination periods for final-year students and the dates for FSEs will be set by faculties/institutes in such a way as to minimize disruption to existing circumstances due to the coronavirus epidemic.
- In justified cases, students will be allowed to take exams in the subjects of the spring semester of the 2019/2020 academic year during the teaching period and the examination period of the fall semester of the 2020/2021 academic year. Specific conditions are set by the Dean of the Faculty/Head of the Institute.
Following the update of the schedule, the Deans and the Heads of university institutes specify the dates of examinations at individual faculties and university institutes. The Deans and the Heads of university institutes, in cooperation with the course guarantors, will also decide on the manner of each examination.
Each student will be able to use the first exam date only when they are able to arrive for the exam without any problems (this applies especially to students residing outside the Czech Republic). If a student completes courses from the spring semester in the fall semester, these courses will not be considered as “repeated” courses and the students will be able to use regular and resit dates.
Final theses
Dates and form of submission of final theses will be determined by individual faculties and departments of BUT to their students with regard to the nature of theses. So follow the information at your faculty or discuss it with your supervisor.
State Final Examination
Deans and Heads of university institutes decide on the dates of the state final examinations. Therefore, follow the information at your faculty (department). We also take into account the specific situation of students who do not have a permanent residence in the Czech Republic and who may, therefore, have difficulty completing their studies in time. Even for these students, a feasible variant of the completion of the study will be prepared taking into account objective external conditions.
Foreign study stays:
The students who have returned from their study stays earlier without completing their study abroad must solve their situation individually at their faculty or department. If a student fails to get enough credits to advance to the next year due to an early finishing of the study stay, they will be granted an exemption.
Advancing to the next year of study
The conditions for the advancing of students to the next year of study set by the BUT Study and Examination Regulations and the internal standards of the faculties and departments do not change in any way. The dates for checking the fulfilment of these conditions will be adjusted with regard to the development of the situation in the spring and summer months and with regard to the organization of exams on each individual BUT department. If it is objectively impossible to properly complete certain subjects, the fulfilment of these subjects at the end of the spring semester will not be checked - based on the decision of the F/S. This situation will also be taken into account in cases where students cannot obtain a sufficient number of credits.
Study fees
The Act “On special rules for education and decision-making at universities in 2020”, which was discussed by the Chamber of Deputies, states that the period from 1.3.2020 to 31.8.2020 will not be counted into the total study period for calculating fees. Under this Act, the students, who have not yet been charged, will have an 'extra' period of study for six months, when they will not be charged.
Study fees will continue to be charged for students for whom the fees have previously been charged under the statutory conditions. Each student has the option to request a reduction or waive of the charged fee within 30 days of receiving the decision on the fee obligation. If the current epidemiological situation has any objective impact on a specific fee obligation, this will be taken into account and the specific fee may be reduced or waived. When assessing any such application, the student's current social situation may also be taken into account, if the student applies for it and proves the situation.
Doctoral studies:
Doctoral studies have a specific regime based largely on individual interaction between a teacher and a doctoral student. Doctoral study examinations can be realized in a distance form, depending on the conditions of the particular study and the specific subject.
The state doctoral examinations may be postponed according to the decision of the faculty or department, provided that the doctoral student will not be “penalized” for the later passing of the state doctoral examinations.
Obligatory study stays of doctoral students will be solved individually, most often by postponing this obligation.
Scholarships:
The impacts of the current measures on granting doctoral scholarships, social scholarships and accommodation scholarships are now being negotiated with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. You will be informed of the specific conclusions.
The conditions for awarding the merit scholarship and assessing the impact of the current situation on these conditions are fully within the competence of individual faculties and BUT departments.
Halls of residence and refectories
Students are encouraged to follow the website (www.kam.vutbr.cz) for up-to-date information. Refectories operation is currently limited due to the development of the situation and government resolutions.
Accommodated students are obliged to observe hygiene and safety measures, they are prohibited from receiving visitors, they must only stay in rooms where they are staying and stay in common areas of the accommodation only for the necessary time with respiratory protective means (nose, mouth) such as a respirator, mask, mouthpiece assembly, scarf, shawl or other means to prevent droplet spread.
The significant and up-to-date information on accommodation is published on the university and Halls of Residence and Dining Services web sites. Halls of Residence and Dining Services is in contact with the students involved. Here, too, we ask students to follow the media and the website of the university and the Halls of Residence and Dining Services, as the information is updated with regard to the government decisions and the development of the situation.
BUT management and the director of Halls of Residence and Dining Services would like to thank all students for their cooperation and compliance with government regulations.
[1] applies to both Bachelor and Master degree study programs

Extraordinary measures on the time structure of the academic year 2019/2020
The time structure of the summer semester of the academic year 2019/2020 is modified as follows:
- Completion of day-time studies for subjects, that could not be taught in its entirety in a distance form during the closure of universities, will take place after the necessary extent of operation of the universities is restored. The specific schedule is set by the Dean of the Faculty/Head of the University Institute. In justified cases, the faculty (university institute) will enable students to complete these courses in the winter semester of the academic year 2020/2021.
- The examination period for students, whose study plan does not include the final state examination in this academic year, is extended until September 30, 2020.
- Examination periods for final-year students and dates of FSEs will be set by faculties/university institutes in such a way as to minimize the interference by the existing circumstances due to the coronavirus epidemic.
- In justified cases, students will be allowed to take exams in the subjects of the summer semester of the academic year 2019/2020 during the teaching period and the examination period of the winter semester of the academic year 2020/2021. Specific conditions will be set by the Dean of the Faculty/Head of the University Institute.
This measure shall take effect on April 14, 2020.

Information for the students from abroad
Dear students,
In the current difficult situation related to the coronavirus epidemic, we are intensively addressing the course of study of all our students and the possibility of its continuation or proper termination. We also do not forget about the situation of BUT students residing abroad. The vast majority of these students went home, and at this moment it is not clear when and under what conditions they will be able to return to the Czech Republic and continue their studies at BUT.
Although the future development in this matter is unclear and difficult to predict, we want to assure all our foreign students that we do not forget them and are looking for solutions for their study. If there is a ban on free travel between the Czech Republic and other countries, then you may not be able to study and complete the courses on the same dates as your schoolmates who are in the Czech Republic. First of all, we want to assure you – the students from abroad – that in any case your studies will not be terminated at the end of the 2019/2020 academic year for the failure to meet the study program conditions if the reason for this failure is the fact, that you are unable to attend the classes or examinations due to the international situation even after the resumption of operation of Czech universities. If travel restrictions between the Czech Republic and other countries persist, we will take this situation into account and prepare a solution that – we believe – is acceptable and will allow you to continue your studies at BUT. The situation of foreign students studying at universities in the Czech Republic is also dealt with by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic, so it can be assumed that the studies of these students will also be solved at this central level.
We are glad that many talented students from abroad have chosen BUT for their university studies. We greatly appreciate this and we will do everything possible to enable these students to continue their studying and to complete it properly in the current crisis. At the same time, we cannot guarantee that your studies will be conducted under the same conditions that apply to students residing in the Czech Republic, or for the students who stayed in the Czech Republic. The only reason that could initiate this situation could be the impossibility of your arrival in Brno due to the regulation of the movement of persons between the Czech Republic and other countries.
However, we can guarantee that the management of BUT and faculties will do everything possible to minimize any complications associated with your return to the Czech Republic and your start to study; we will try to be forthcoming. We firmly believe that we will all be able to overcome this difficult situation together. I wish you all a lot of optimism and especially good health.

Important information on the study agenda
Dear students,
Distance learning
- We are examining the possibilities of non-presence possibilities of examinations, but at present, we do not assume that it is possible to take exams in a distance form.
- In the view of the above, BUT will allow each student, including foreign students, in relation to external conditions (which we are not currently able to predict in terms of time or scope) to be able to complete all exam dates when it is possible to come to the exam without any problems.
- We also expect the whole exam period to be shifted by a few weeks, or to the period of summer holidays, at worst until the beginning of the fall semester - the specific implementation at BUT depends on the date when the restriction of the free movement of persons will end.
- Study fees must continue to be assessed for students who meet the statutory fee requirements. This is due to the fact that the extension of the standard length of study increased by one year happened before the current epidemiological situation.
- However, each student has the possibility to request a reduction or remission of the assessed fee within 30 days of receiving the decision on the fee obligation. If a particular fee obligation is affected by the current epidemiological situation, this will be taken into account and the specific fee will be reduced or waived entirely. When assessing any such application, the student's current social situation may also be taken into account if the student applies for it and proves his/her situation.
- According to current information on the website of MEYS, the Ministry of Education is preparing legislative changes and modifications in the student matrix so that the current state of emergency does not lead to prolonged studies. We welcome this initiative of MEYS, and if the appropriate changes are made to the law, we will apply them immediately in the BUT environment.

Important information about the accommodation at the BUT Halls of residence
- Students who have not checked out of BUT Halls of residence and continue to use them are governed by the concluded accommodation agreement and the halls of residence code. Nothing changes on their situation (at least as far as halls of residence are concerned). We ask only for cooperation if the current crisis situation requires non-standard solutions and procedures.
- For the students who do not use the halls of residence and who are not yet checked out of the halls of residence for whatever reason, the Halls of Residence and Dining Services of BUT will prepare a technical option of checking out. These students will be informed by March 20, 2020 at the latest (more information can be found here).
- Students who have checked out since March 12, 2020 and students who will be checked out according to the previous point will not be obliged to pay the residence fee, even if they have done the check-out electronically and cannot physically clear their belongings from the rooms for objective reasons. In this case, BUT will not apply Article 5 (2) of the accommodation agreement for the duration of the crisis situation (from the day following on, the accommodation provider is entitled to move the items placed in the accommodation rooms to the designated places. After the expiration of one month from the date of termination of the agreement according to Article I of this agreement, these things shall be considered abandoned and the accommodation provider shall proceed according to the provisions of §1051 et seq. of the Civil Code), unless it is necessary to deal with an emergency - for example, the need to vacate accommodation capacity in the public interest.
- In the case the emergency ends and the studies is resumed in the current semester, the students who checked out from the halls of residence after March 12, 2020 will have the right of priority re-enrolment to the halls of residence, and the Halls of Residence and Dining Services will guarantee their bed according to their accommodation agreement.
- Checking out from the hall of residence in this emergency situation will not affect the possibility of making a reservation request for the next academic year. For the purposes of next year's accommodation booking, students who have already or will check out from the halls of residence since March 12, 2020 will be considered as "students living in halls of residence at the time of application" within the meaning of Guideline 46/2017 (Rules for accommodation of BUT students and staff in the BUT halls of residence).
- The BUT management assures students that BUT will apply a friendly approach in all cases justified by the emergency situation in which we have found ourselves and that BUT's current priority is to ensure primarily the safety and health of all those affected.
We encourage our students and employees to return from abroad. On March 13, 2020, on the basis of the issued Decision No. 1/2020, it was recommended to students and employees, who are currently abroad, to return from their stays abroad to the Czech Republic. In the case of Erasmus+ mobility, the Centre for International Cooperation (CIC) is ready to solve the situation with reimbursement of costs incurred due to the return to the Czech Republic. Universities will receive instructions from CIC on how to proceed in practice as soon as possible. It is recommended that students and staff keep the documents related to travel expenses or other extraordinary costs related to mobility. This recommendation does not only concern mobility within the Erasmus+ program, but also all trips abroad.
New foreign trips of students, academic and non-academic staff and other employees in education, financed from the programmes administered by CIC, will no longer be started. Students and academic staff returning from the risk areas are required to observe quarantine. The list of risk areas is available here. We recommend that all students and staff follow the websites of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Health and the main BUT website for coronavirus.
BUT canteen operation is now limited! Due to the current government regulation on the closure of public catering, we are forced to limit the operation of canteens at BUT. From Monday, March 16, 2020, only the Caffe Bar Piccolo will be open from 11 am to 2 pm, using a dispensing window. All kinds of pizza and Chinese noodles will be on offer, all take away.Updated on 13th March 2020
Decision no. 1/2020 in Relation to the Development of the Crisis Situation in the Spread of Coronavirus
Updated on 12th March 2020
Updated on 10th March 2020
Brno University of Technology in response to the emergency measures of the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic has cancelled daytime teaching from March 11, 2020 until further notice. Teaching at the University of the Third Age and the BUT Junior Technical University is also cancelled. Likewise, according to the announcement of the State Security Council, the announced social events, such as faculty balls, will not take place. Further to the Deans' decision, the study will be replaced by a distance form (e.g. webinars, internet presentations, on-line lectures, individual on-line consultations, etc.). There will also be no lessons in smaller teams, i.e. in studios or laboratories.
Also the university libraries will be closed and there will be no sports activities at the school's sports grounds. However, the university buildings will not be closed because employees will continue going to work. They will also be provided with the catering possibilities. Furthermore, the Rector recommends not approving (or canceling) travel orders of employees who should travel to risk areas.
"Our priority is to enable students graduating this year to complete their studies properly and on time. The way of organization of the final exams will be decided well in advance," the Rector of BUT Petr Štěpánek said. We continue to monitor the situation, and the measures may change over time. Please follow the school's website and social networks.
The BUT Crisis Staff appointed RNDr. Mgr. Daniela Dvorská as the contact person for the spread of coronavirus, who you can contact in case of any questions (dvorska@vutbr.cz or 778 790 510).
Updated on 2nd March 2020The Rector of Brno University of Technology recommends the university staff and students arriving from the risk areas affected by the coronavirus epidemic that causes COVID-19, or in case they get into direct contact with infected people, to avoid going out and attending classes or working at the university for the necessary two weeks, even if they do not manifest any disease symptoms. In this context, he recommends all Deans of the faculties and Heads of Departments and Heads of other parts of the University within the necessary period to:
