Czech Art of the 70s and 80s - seminar

The subject focuses at the whole spectrum of 1970s and 1980s art.
Official art: the so-called national and merited artists, typical topics of official painting and scuplture, the so-called engaged art, art in public space, the Army Art Studio (AVS)
Various kinds of "unofficial" art, the "forbidden" artists, the underground, the samizdat.
The "grey zone" - semiofficial art, reflection of unofficial art in official press, semi-official exhibitions, publications, declared and non-declared artistic groups, communities, solitary artists, important exhibitions and publications of unofficial and semi-official 1970s and 80s art scene.
The linking of musical and visual art activities: The Křižovníci School of Dry Humour Without Fun, The Jazz Section SH.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The studetns will learn about historical and cultural contexts of the period in focus and of selected artists' works. They will also learn to create structured image databases and create a paper in PDF format; this might serve as a blueprint for their potential theoretical activities in the MA cycle of their studies.

Prerequisites

General knowledge of Czech art since 1960s and of wider historical contexts.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations..

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Students will work on one topic and present it both as an oral and written paper and another paper in the PDF form with immage documentation. Both topics have to be accompanied by a structured immage database.

Course curriculum

Topical areas - students will choose more specific topics
1. late 1960s in Czech visual art, the results of political changes. The athmosphere of the 1970s and its impact on art. The phenomenon of "home-made art."
2. Unofficial activities of 1970s: music, action art, non-official presentations. The meaning of music for the 1970s and 80s generation. Underground, soft underground, the unofficial scene, The Jazz Section.
3. Official art of the 70s and 80s, the "national" and "merited" artists, importatn presentations, the official galleries, official topics of art, AVS.
4. Czech art between 1980 - 85. The young generation after 1980 (the Academy graduates from 1973 after)
5. Non-declared communities, cirles of friends, artistic groups. Contacts and activities between the generations, the Grey Brick magazine, The Minigallery. Important places of presenting new tendencies in art.
6. art in 1985 - 90. Canges in the official scene and journalism, the onset of post-modernism, the establishment of The Stubborn group and the 12/15 group, influences from international art. the revolutionary year 1989 and what it brought into visual art.

Aims

The course will attempt at pointing the students to deeper understanding of selected 1970s and 80s art issues so that they can find inspirative topics both for their theoretical and artistic activities. We will analyze the logic of the times, which determined the artistic beginnings of the contemporary middle-aged generation of artists on selected examples.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance at seminars is manatory, minimum atttendance is 70%.
