Czech Art in the Regions - seminar

The course focuses on artistic activities outside Prague from the beginning of the 20th century up to the present.
The course also looks into the issues of the so-called regional art and traces the roles of regional galleries since 1950s, the issues of "unofficial exhibitions" from the 60s to the 80s, it pays attention to local artistic communities and solitary artistic personalities, it lookes at the underground and the "soft" underground, it focuses on the interdependence of artistic and music scene of the 70s and 80s. The course will attempt at pointing the students to deeper understanding of selected 1970s and 80s art issues so that they can find inspirative topics both for their theoretical and artistic activities.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will work on one topic and present it both as an oral and written paper and another paper in the PDF form with immage documentation. Both topics have to be accompanied by a structured immage database.

Prerequisites

General knowledge of Czech art since 1960s and of wider historical contexts.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations..

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Students are assesed on the basis of active participation in the seminars (discussion), the oral presentation of one paper (selected partial topic) and the final essay with image database on a chosen topic.

Course curriculum

1. Folklorism, art in the regions since the end of the 19th century. SVUM (The Moravian Artists' Union) and other artists' societies. Artists from Bohemia in Moravia, "Moravian" art in Prague. Activities outside Prague> Brno, České Budějovice, Kolín, etc.
2. Activities of the young generation of artists of the 40s and 50s outside Prague: regional galleries, important workshops, exhibitions on the verge of "officiality"
3. 1970s. Artists in the country, events. Music underground, local soft underground scene, solitary artists in provincial towns. The atttempts of regional galleries at continuity with the current art trends. Regional centres of unofficial art activities. Brno, Olomouc, Ostrava, Liberec, Pardubice, Louny
4. 1980s. Unofficial exhibitions in the regions, their importance, the heading of these activities towards the Prague suburbs and even Prague centre after 1987.
5. New understanding of centres and peripheries, cities and regions in art, the importance of communication possibilites, new roles of the regions in Czech art since the 1990s
New schools, art centres, and art graduates active in the regions.

Aims

Students will deal with a chosen issue by the study of available resources and present the results in an oral and written paper and a theoretical essay in a PDF format. Students hav eto be able to put the issues in focus into appropriate social and historical contexts.

Attendance at seminars is manatory, minimum atttendance is 70%.
